new phone for wife help please 500ish

    hey guys

i'm not savvy with tech at all so i've come here for recommendations on phones, i've got a basic want list

    1. good camera
    2. good battery life
    3. $500 budget maybe stretch to 600 tops if its worth it...
    4. maybe a good supported phone you can flash a custom rom to as i hate all the garbage they put on them...

thats it.... also we do not upgrade often so will be in service for around 4 years if that makes any difference

    thanks fellas

Xiaomi Mi A3 - cheap as, runs pretty much stock Android.

I'd recommend the Pixel 3a, but that's a bit out of budget and not officially available in NZ anyway

I was browsing the other day and came across this: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPH...one-4GB64GB-Ne
On the surface it seems to be similar spec to the A3, both will be legit phones I imagine
    A3: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPH...e---Not-just-B

Could be worth looking into? I've had a Redmi Note 3 Pro for the last 2 and a bit years, still running really well.

$500 gets you a Redmi Note 8 Pro:

Bought a Mi Mix 3 for my girlfriend for $550 on Ali. She absolutely adores it. I'm a bit jealous vs my S10e. With the exception of IP68 it's a better phone.

    Would recommend.

    Looks like it'll be $300USD on 11/11

Yeah, I loved my Mi Mix 2, but the camera performance is a bit hamstrung without Camera2 API - not that the standard camera is terrible, but it's significantly better once you root and install Google Camera; the catch being the modded camera apps are variable levels of buggy (and this gets worse the older your phone gets).
